Into Thin Air is one of my favorite books because it is filled with adventure!
The book is a personal account of the May, 1996 Mount Everest disaster by journalist Jon Krakauer. Four out of Krakauer’s five teammates who reached the Everest summit during their expedition died when a sudden, unexpected storm swept into the area, trapping them on the mountain. This was the deadliest single year in Mount Everest history. A total of fifteen people died during the season.
In addition to being a fun adventure to read, the book also raises questions about the unsafe commercialization of mountain climbing. Krakauer analyzes factors that contributed to the 1996 disaster, including the use of bottled oxygen and commercial guides to lead inexperienced climbers beyond their limits. (Lori Pleasant)
